What's New at VU

First BSNExpress Class Starts. In May 2003, the first class of 26 men and women—ranging from 23 to 43 years of age—started the BSNExpress program. They come from a variety of backgrounds, with degrees in physical education, chemistry, biology, and criminal justice, among others. While they recognize the intensity of the program,  many students have commented positively on the quality of the faculty and the support they offer the students, in addition to the array of learning resources at the College.  BSNExpress  enables a student with a bachelor’s degree in another discipline to earn a BSN degree in 14 months. For more information, contact Coordinator Maryanne Lieb at 610.519.6596.

Nursing students make an impact on health in Honduras. This June, seven students from the College traveled to Honduras for a week as part of their clinical requirement for their Community Health/Health Promotion course. They stayed at Amigos de Jesus, an orphanage located near Macualiza. Students identified major health problems of this region, developed educational presentations to be presented in Spanish, and presented the sessions at local schools, orphanages, and the health clinic in Macualiza.

Pediatric needs of the community were also assessed, focusing on the health of the local orphans.  Students completed physical assessments on children and immunized all of the boys at Amigos de Jesus against measles, rubella and tetanus. For more information on international opportunities for our nursing students, contact Dr. Elizabeth Keech at 610.519.4912.

CE courses by request.  If your strategies to fight the nursing shortage include education opportunities and team development within your organization, we have just the solution—our courses by request. For over 20 years the College of Nursing has offered on-site programming to health care groups and agencies.  Needs can be met through customized workshops, seminars, certificate programs, or through already existing courses. We are currently working with hospitals in Philadelphia and northern New Jersey. For further information contact Dr. Lynore DeSilets at 610.519.4930.

MSN Program for Nurse Anesthesia. The Villanova University-Crozer-Chester Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia offers unique learning opportunities to its students. The highly competitive 27-month program draws students nationally and offers three curriculum course tracks that give students flexibility and the opportunity to take MSN classes prior to the anesthesia clinical component. There are traditional, nontraditional, and post-master’s courses of study. With many of the core courses online, both out-of-state and local students can take courses prior to enrolling in the anesthesia portion of the program; this enables the working student to continue full-time employment while studying at home. For more information, contact Geri Hansen at 610-519-4934.
