Thanks to all of our alumni who planned and participated in our 50th Anniversary celebration. The gala weekend was a great success, topped off with the announcement of a major endowment by the Connelly Foundation to fund priorities in the College of Nursing.  You may view summaries of the events on our Web site.


What's New at VU

Helping future Villanova nurses.
As alumni you are the best advertisement the quality of College’s programs. Looking to help future Villanova nurses? As alumni, you may:

  • meet with or call prospective candidates in your region to answer questions (November through April).

  • contact accepted students in your region to offer congratulations (February through April).

  • host social get-togethers for candidates at your home (April through August).

  • give a 15-minute talk about your specialty to high school students who are exploring the profession in our spring program called Discover Nursing.

Alumni of our MSN program may also volunteer to come to a graduate studies Open House in October and speak to prospective students. Contact Ann Barrow (610.519.6814) for more information.

CE courses by request. If your strategies to fight the nursing shortage include education opportunities and team development within your organization, we have just the solution—our courses by request. For over 20 years the College of Nursing has offered on-site programming to health care groups and agencies. Needs can be met through customized workshops, seminars, certificate programs, or through already existing courses. We are currently working with hospitals in Philadelphia and northern New Jersey. New faces. Former University trustee Marguerite Stuhler Schlag, BSN ’68, EdD, RN has been named as the new Assistant Dean and Director, Graduate Program. She is assuming this new role upon the retirement of Dr. Claire Manfredi this June. Dr. Schlag was formerly the Director for Advanced Nursing Practice, Education, and Research at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, NJ.
Maryanne Lieb, MSN ‘85, RN has been appointed the first Coordinator of the BSNExpress program. She was an Associate Professor of Nursing at Delaware County Community College in Media, PA. BSNExpress, a new 14-month accelerated program for second-degree students, had its first class start in May 2003.

In memoriam. College of Nursing founder, Rev. Francis X. N. McGuire, OSA, died at age 93.

Rosemary Schiller-Okolowski, MSN, RN, a faculty member since 1968, died recently. She was an Assistant Professor and taught research and maternal child health to undergraduate students in the College. She will be missed by faculty, staff, students, and alumni.


What's Happening with You?

Use of technology. The College of Nursing is informally surveying alumni to find out how they are using technology in the clinical and classroom areas. If you or your institution is using PDAs, PDA/cellular combinations, laptops, or tablet PCs, we'd love to hear your story. Email or call Prof. Marita Frain at 610.519.6806.

Career Opportunities

NCLEX Writers
Jennifer O'Rourke Tiffen, BSN ’95, an NCLEX Content
Associate for the National Council for the State Boards of Nursing in Chicago, is seeking fellow nurses to write or review questions for the NCLEX Exam. Participants have their travel and food expenses covered and receive over 30 CEUs. There are 3- to 4- day sessions throughout the year. Villanova alumni (nurses and nurse educators) have participated in previous panels and have received high ratings.
