Dear Alumni Ambassadors,

Summer is upon us but the College is still as active as ever. We have the upcoming alumni weekend, our 2nd class of BSNExpress students has hit the ground running and we are very proud to say our first doctoral class arrived June 1st.

Villanova hosted another successful alumni weekend June 11-13, 2004, including a special update from Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor M. Louise Fitzpatrick. The chat with the dean was held Saturday, June 12 in the St. Augustine Center with members of the classes of 1964 and 1974, plus many other familiar faces.

What's New at VU

Alumni Mass and Awards. At the Fifteenth Annual Mass and Alumni Awards ceremony on April 17th, the College of Nursing bestowed its medallion on two distinguished alumnae — Terry Barker McGoldrick, B.S.N. '74 and Michele L. Damas, B.S.N. ’93. McGoldrick (center right) received the Medallion for Leadership in Nursing Practice and Health Care Delivery and Damas (center left) the Medallion for Distinguished Service to the College of  Nursing. They are pictured below with Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A., University President and Dean Fitzpatrick.

The College also honored four of its faculty for 25 years of service: Dr. Isabella Erickson, Dr. Elizabeth Keech, Dr. Maureen Sullivan and Dr. Catherine Todd-Magel. Additionally, it celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Continuing Education in Nursing and Health Care Program headed by Dr. Lynore DeSilets.

Students' multicultural and international opportunities expand. The opportunities for multicultural and international study continue to expand. Students recently traveled to Peru and Nicaragua to promote health, Ireland to study international nursing and Weslaco, Tex. to have a unique parent-child nursing experience.

Nursing Alumni Society growth. The Nursing Alumni Society is interested in expanding its membership. Please let us know what ideas you have for future activities, and if you are a member of other nursing alumni societies, how they keep you as an involved member.

Featured Program

Role Excellence: The Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing Administration.  This highly successful, exclusive program, now in its 21st year, is practical and specific to the needs of nursing administrators and nursing managers holding an earned master's degree. Meticulously planned and continually updated, it adds critical skills and meaningful insights in the areas of finance, labor/human relations, leadership, team building, politics, risk management, and the changing health care environment.

Sara Reeder, Ph.D., R.N. Assistant Professor Sara Reeder, Ph.D., R.N. has been appointed to the Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness in the city of Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Reeder has also been invited by the council to speak about women and cardiovascular disease to participants in the mayor’s fitness program.  Additionally, she is the recipient of a $15,000 award from the Lindback Research Foundation to support her research examining physiological and psychosocial predictors of myocardial reinfarction in women.  

Janie Brown, Ed.D., R.N. Associate Professor Janie Brown, Ed.D., R.N. is being honored as a  Legacy Leader by Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. Dr. Brown, previously named as an outstanding interviewer, is being recognized for her many contributions to the Shoah Foundation. The Foundation, based in Los Angeles, has created a database of over 50,000 testimonials from Holocaust survivors.
