obesity center/plans regional conference
The College of Nursing proudly announces
the establishment of the MacDonald Center for Obesity
Prevention and Education (COPE) which was inaugurated on

Nominate your classmates or other fellow alumni for
their distinguished achievement in our profession by the
deadline of December 7th
using our online form. Medallions are awarded
in the following categories: Distinguished Contributions
to the Profession, Leadership in Nursing Practice,
Clinical Excellence in Nursing, Excellence in Nursing
Education, Excellence in Nursing Research and
Distinguished Service to the College of Nursing.

Investing in patient safety
The
Learning Resource Center has further invested in
patient safety, purchasing five medication
dispensing cabinets for its clinical simulation
labs. Students
benefit from hands-on practice with this
technology.

Day of service leads to improved sight for area
schoolchildren
It
might seem impossible to bring together 80
people and have them work as a well-oiled
machine in a focused 2-hour time period, but
that's exactly what nursing student and faculty
volunteers did during a screening blitz for the
recent Day of Service. Over 200 Kindergarten and
first grade students are the better for it--and
so are the nurses.

New
DNP program
Meeting
the leadership needs of today's advanced
practice nurses through a creative and
convenient curriculum is the core of the new
Doctor of Nursing Practice program for 2012.
Designed as a post-master's program for advanced
practice nurses, the faculty invite prospective
students to an Information Session on Nov. 30.

In September, the College hosted a delegation
from the Sultanate of Oman's Ministry of Health.

Providing healthcare to Haitian immigrants
Eight students traveled to the Dominican
Republic during Fall Break to provide healthcare
to the poorest of the poor. Performing
assessments, administering medications,
installing water filtrations systems and
participating in research were just a few
of the ways students developed a better sense of
poverty and international nursing.

career impact
Patricia K. Bradley, PhD,
RN was recognized this fall with two honors: fellowship

named Jonas Scholars
Stephanie Jeffers and Catherine Morse were
selected from among a national pool of
applicants as members of the second cohort of
National League for Nursing Jonas Scholars,
supporting their doctoral research in nursing

Dr.
Calvin B. Johnson, President of Altre Strategic
Solutions Group, presented a compelling lecture
“Health Disparities” on September 27th. His
background of clinical practice, service and
government combined with his national leadership
roles brought a unique perspective to the
