What's New at VU

College of Nursing receives $96,000 from foundation. The College of Nursing has been awarded $96,000 in student financial aid from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation. The financial aid is to be expended during the 2003-2004 academic year and summer 2004 by the Villanova University Office of Financial Assistance. It provides assistance for senior students in the traditional 4-year BSN degree program, undergraduates enrolled in summer school, college graduates with degrees in other disciplines who are enrolled in the accelerated BSN program and graduate students.

Alpha Nu Research Day: "Advancing Nursing Practice." The Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau will hold its annual Research Day on Thursday, April 15, 2004. All are welcome to submit abstracts by February 14th.

Congratulations

Dr. Carol Weingarten. Associate Professor Carol Toussie Weingarten, Ph.D., R.N. is among four nurse educators selected nationally to be featured in an upcoming nurse faculty recruitment campaign. The campaign, part of the Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow initiative to raise awareness of careers in nursing education, is slated to begin in early 2004. Weingarten’s application included her reflections on 26 years as a nurse educator and the unique benefits she has reaped in choosing this career path.

Dr. Nancy Sharts-Hopko. Professor Nancy Sharts-Hopko, PhD, RN, FAAN was elected treasurer of Sigma Theta Tau International. The election took place during the Honor Society of Nursing’s 37th Biennial Convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on November 4, 2003. Dr. Sharts-Hopko is a member of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International since 1975.

Career Opportunities

Educator in parent-newborn and community health nursing. The College seeks a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor in parent-newborn and community health nursing. The candidate should have a doctorate in nursing or related field (MSN required) and teaching, research and practice experience in parent-newborn nursing. This individual will teach theory and clinical content; sustain a productive, fundable program of research; and would ideally also teach community health or related area.  Position available August 2004.  Send letter of application, curriculum vitae, graduate school transcripts and contact information for three references to:  Dr. Frances Keen, Chair, Search Committee, Villanova University College of Nursing, 800 Lancaster Ave., Villanova, PA 19085. 

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP). Fellow Villanova nurse, Susan Paparella, is Director of Consulting Services for ISMP. They are looking for another nurse to join ISMP, primarily to write for newsletters, consults, public presentations and other clinically-related projects. The candidate would need to have a BSN (MSN preferred), 10 or more years of recent clinical and managerial experience, would be self-directed, with excellent writing skills.  Experience in quality and risk management a plus.
